I found a Tiktok that perpetuates hatred and discrimination towards black women, it
reads, “its 7:15 in the morning on the first day of school and a group of black girls start
being loud” with a man visibly mad and frustrated on the screen. The background music
of the Tiktok repeats “i hate n*” over and over again. This very hateful TikTok is a
prime example of how black women are unfairly criticized and shamed for simply
displaying their rightful personalities. Moreover, this generalizes black women and
perpetuates the stereotype that black women are naturally “loud and obnoxious,” which
is a stereotype we have all seen spread across social media. This stereotype of the
“angry black woman” is deeply rooted in American culture and dates back to slavery.
People have attributed loudness to aggressiveness and anger, building negative
assumptions on the character of black women everywhere. The fact that the music
choice is just a repetition of hating on black people further emphasizes how normalized
it has become to hate on black people, and especially black females. I scrolled through
almost all of the comments, and they were all agreeing with the content and applauding
the song choice. It is the spread and upvoting of posts like this that continue to harm
black women in our society.
