    Pic Collage

Student submission – Final Project VCU FA24 For my project, I explored the connection between racism and sexism that Black women face, called misogynoir. This form of oppression, which mixes anti-Black racism and misogyny, is especially common in the digital age, where online spaces have made it even worse. Using a mix of analysis and creative digital media, I wanted to show the subtle and harmful ways misogynoir appears in these spaces, encouraging people to think critically about its impact in our digital world.

    Pic Collage

Student submission – Final Project FA24 “In the process of creating this project, I was able to synthesize the information we learned throughout the class by closely reading into several of the texts from throughout the semester. I re-read through several articles that we covered in class and picked out excerpts that stuck out to me. I kept in mind that these images would be used for the class website, and so I also wanted to pick excerpts that were easily digestible and could be understood by someone who hadn’t read much on misogynoir (specifically digital misogynoir) yet.“

    Love Island and Misogynoir

Doriauna Anderson – VCU FA24 @doriii_anderson on instagram Love Island is a show just like any other dating show, people are there to find and explore this idea of love. The only twist here is that there are a ton of contestants coming in and out and there’s “recoupling” and “dumping”. In the show, Serena was a slow burn; not quick to jump into anything, but she formed a bond with contestant Kordell. Unfortunately, when it came to “Casa Amor” he brought back a woman for the recoupling, Daia, while Serena stayed “single” awaiting his return. Upon his arrival with Daia, Serena rightfully tore into him at how disrespectful she…

    Murder of Rebecca Cheptegei

Student Submission – Current Event VCU FA24 Rebecca Cheptegei’s tragic death serves as a stark reminder of how racism and misogyny combine to produce misogynoir, or violence against Black women. Her murder by her partner highlights the increased vulnerability of Black female athletes, especially in patriarchal and racially charged environments, as did the earlier killings of fellow athletes Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua. These women, despite their notoriety and prosperity, endure neglect from society as well as domestic violence, and their hardships frequently eclipse their accomplishments. When compared to similar incidents involving athletes who are not Black, the international response to Cheptegei’s case has been relatively muted, which highlights the…

    Kamala Chew Toy

Student Submission – Current Event Fall 2024 Virginia Commonwealth University Misogynoir is a type of prejudice that targets Black women by combining racism, sexism, and often violence. A Kamala Harris chew toy is an example of this. One way that misogynoir works is by using violent and degrading images to make Black women seem less important and less human. Creating a chew toy that looks like Vice President Kamala Harris, who is a historical figure for being the first female, Black, and South Asian Vice President of the United States, takes away from her prestigious position and makes her an easy target for contempt and even ridicule. Not only is this item disrespectful,…
